Locavest - Invest in your community! About

About Locavest

I coined the word "Locavest" in early-2008, when a couple of things converged for me. First, I had recently latched on to the concept of being a "locavore," or someone who makes an effort to buy from local businesses, eat locally grown foods, and be conscious of both the health benefits of getting nourishment from the local food system and the economic benefits of keeping money in the local economy. Then I came across the concept of peer-to-peer lending, in which instead of going to a bank for a loan, one can source a loan from multiple people who invest small amounts that are tied together into a single loan, and each of the lenders earns interest from the portions they invested.

When these two concepts collided in my mind, Locavest was born, and I started designing and building a service that would facilitate local, peer-to-peer "locavesting" with an emphasis on building and strengthening community economies. In today's socially-connected world, it's easier than ever to reach others in our communities, and in these times of economic pressure, what better way to look for support than through those who would benefit more than just financially from the invested resources we put to work?

That, to me, is the heart of locavesting: knowing that when I succeed with the help of my community, my whole community succeeds!
